High Tech Heroes #35, allotment 2: Howard Knoebel
Retired RADAR, inertial navigation, and ionospheric research pioneer Howard Knoebel demonstrates a sawmill which he designed and built. Howard also claimed to be the last living member of the research group who was present at the relatively recently declassified "Crossroads" undersea nuclear test. He attributed his relative longevity to an extreme level of self-control which enabled him, unlike others present, to precisely implement the government's recommendations: To prevent ingestion of radioactive fallout, these included never picking his nose, and ceasing smoking his ever-present Lucky Strikes, for the duration of the test. All the same, Howard was eventually "misdiagnosed" with a neuroblastoma. Later it was decided that his actual affliction was something slightly different which lacked an accepted classification. In any case, the government disavowed responsibility (as it did for most of the apparent radiation-induced maladies suffered by other researchers), and insurance refused to cover treatment. It was claimed to be only a coincidence that, in later life, a high incidence of radiation-like maladies afflicted these noble men, including another friend, "Gus" Johnson, who once saved my father's life.
